It’s hard to find a healthy vegan BBQ sauce at the store. Most traditional BBQ sauces are loaded with high fructose corn syrup, various oils, tons of sodium, plus questionable “natural” ingredients and preservatives. Furthermore, some are not vegan as they might even contain anchovies or honey.
If you do manage to find sugar-free or oil-free, it will still have tons of sodium and likely a hefty price tag. When you love BBQ sauce like I do, that can add up quickly! This fast and easy homemade sauce is free of oil and refined sugar. Plus it includes minimal amounts of sodium, which you can omit as desired.
Best of all it comes together in less than 5 minutes! Watch the video to see how easy it is and find the recipe below.
Homemade BBQ Sauce: Oil-Free, Vegan
Course: CondimentsCuisine: Oil-Free, VeganDifficulty: Easy5
minutesA fast and easy homemade barbecue sauce, free of oil and refined sugar.
Ingredients
15 ounce can no salt added tomato sauce*
1 tablespoon date syrup*
1½ tablespoons vegan Worcestershire sauce*
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar or balsamic vinegar
2 teaspoons granulated garlic
2 teaspoons granulated onion
2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon salt substitute (I used Well Your World’s Stardust)
½ teaspoon chili powder
¼ teaspoon allspice
⅛ teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon liquid smoke*
Directions
- Add everything to a medium sized mixing bowl and whisk together.
- Store in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 weeks.
Notes
- Feel free to use maple syrup, date sugar, or whole dates (of course you’ll need to blend the sauce if using whole dates!)
- Make sure it’s vegan as many Worcestershire sauces have anchovies. Most also have added sugar, if avoiding sugar, you can substitute coconut aminos, tamari, or soy sauce. If you want to avoid sodium as well, you can omit this altogether.
- If you want the smoky flavor, but don’t have liquid smoke, feel free to swap the regular paprika for smoked paprika.
